Homemade Remedies for Asthma Treatment

Asthma occurs when airflow in the lungs is blocked by swelling of the lining that covers the airways. Asthma can range from mild to severe with symptoms that range from wheezing and coughing to a complete blockage of airflow. Asthma is a very common condition amongst children and often goes away with age. Asthma rarely requires medical treatment though asthma inhalers help treat symptoms if they become unbearable. Asthma sufferers only need to take their medication when they experience an attack or an increase in existing symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, or coughing.

There are many home remedies for Asthma that Asthmatics can use instead of visiting their medical professional straight away. These remedies can be used prescribed by a medical professional or they can be used to complement Asthma medication when Asthmatics are no longer getting relief from their Asthma medication.

Homemade Remedies for Asthma Treatment:

These home remedies for Asthma can help Asthmatics breathe easier with two ingredients that often go hand in hand with Asthma, fresh air and plenty of water.

1.) Plenty of Water:

Asthma is caused by inflammation so drinking lots of water helps with this by diluting the sodium in the body which in turn reduces the fluidity in our cells, therefore, reducing inflammatory symptoms. Drinking 8 glasses of water per day can help reduce asthma symptoms though it is recommended that if you need more than this then seek medical assistance immediately.

2.) Fresh Air:

Asthmatics should breathe as much fresh air as possible which helps Asthmatics breathe easier as Asthma is caused by inflammation that causes the airways to swell. Asthma sufferers should try and breathe in open spaces such as parks, running tracks, or even just taking deep breaths from a window to help Asthmatics' breathing problems.

3.) Vitamin C:

Asthma is often reduced when Asthmatics take high doses of Vitamin C due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Asthmatics can simply increase their Vitamin C intake by eating more citrus fruits like oranges or grapefruits, kiwi fruit, strawberries, red peppers, etc.

4.) Eucalyptus Oil:

This oil may be used via inhalation (breathing in the vapors) or through the application of a chest balm. Asthmatics can also include this oil as part of their bath water which helps Asthmatics relax and breathe easier just before bedtime. Asthma sufferers may even choose to put eucalyptus oil on a pillow for nighttime use.

5.) Honey:

Honey contains many heavy molecules that help Asthmatics' lungs retain moisture, decreasing Asthma symptoms. Asthmatics should take 1 teaspoon (4g) of honey every day which will reduce Asthma. However, it is recommended that you do not eat more than one tablespoon (10g) per day as too much fructose can cause diarrhea and other stomach problems.

6.) Watercress:

Asthmatics can get relief by eating fresh watercress because it contains vitamins A, B, C & E which are all anti-inflammatory in nature thus reducing Asthma symptoms. Asthmatics should take 2 cups (about 50g) of watercress every day.

7.) Garlic:

Asthma is related to inflammation in the body so Asthmatics should not consume too much garlic but one clove per day is enough to reduce Asthma symptoms. Taking lots of garlic can cause bad breath and diarrhea in large amounts so Asthmatics need to be careful with their consumption if they wish to avoid these side effects.

8.) Ginger Root:

Asthma sufferers are advised to use ginger root as it helps Asthma sufferers breathe easier and can be used to treat Asthma attacks by alleviating chest discomfort. Asthmatics should drink one cup (250ml) of ginger tea every day which is enough to help Asthmatics' Asthma.

9.) Cayenne Pepper:

This pepper can relieve Asthma symptoms such as breathlessness, wheezing, and coughing. Asthma sufferers can take 1/2 teaspoon (2g) of cayenne pepper every morning before breakfast or you could take a cayenne pill but this defeats the whole purpose of trying to cure your Asthma naturally so if you choose to take medicine then understanding what causes your Asthma and its symptoms would be futile.

10.) Lemon Balm:

Asthma is caused by inflammation and lemon balm helps Asthmatics' Asthma because it contains rosmarinic acid. Asthmatics should take 1 cup (250ml) of lemon balm tea every day and drink this throughout the day if their Asthma becomes severe.

11.) Zinc:

This mineral can help Asthmatics breathe easier. Asthmatic children may be encouraged to increase their intake of foods containing zinc such as beef, grass-fed lamb, organic free-range eggs, oysters, cinnamon, and turmeric by adding these to cereal in the morning or dinner at night. Adults should take no more than 50mg per day unless advised by a doctor to do otherwise.
