How to Choose Fish and Meat For a Healthy Life

Want to figure out how arsenic appears in chicken? But to learn how to determine which fish grew up in an artificial pool, and which one was swimming in the ocean? We continue to share our helpful tips with inquisitive buyers!

How to Choose Fish and Meat For a Healthy Life Read Below Carefully:

Meat and Poultry:

Choose lean meat and poultry. They have less saturated fat and calories. Choosing meat without fat (or cutting off the fat visible on pieces), you will reduce the content of synthetic pesticides, hormones and antibiotics in your food, as they are most often deposited in animal fat. Grass-fed beef is also a good, healthy alternative. It is about the meat of cows, which throughout their lives eat exclusively grass and hay. In such meat, a high level of fatty omega-3 acids. And although it is lower than in seafood, grass-fed beef is especially useful for children who eat little fish or don’t get nutritional supplements with omega-3 acid.

Organic or not?

If you see a certificate indicating that the product is of organic origin, this means that the animals were not given antibiotics and were treated more humanely than on a regular farm. Of course, this does not guarantee that organic meat will be healthier. Organic poultry has one distinct advantage - it definitely will not have arsenic, which is used as a dietary supplement in small quantities in feed for broiler chickens.

It is worth saying a few words about antibiotics. Unfortunately, in Russia there is no regulatory document prohibiting their use in the meat industry at the legislative level. Therefore, you should rely only on the integrity of the manufacturers. But voluntarily, in self-harm, few decide to abandon them. Thanks to antibiotics, animals become more resilient and able to live for a long time in unsuitable conditions for them: in unheated rooms, eating poor-quality food. Antibiotics are given to animals for the prevention of diseases, which can cause the appearance in their body of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are transmitted to humans.

Right choice:

  • Beef: preferably fillet, meat for roast and tenderloin.
  • Pork: preferably tenderloin, loin and chops of meat loin or on ribs.
  • Ground beef: choose minced meat from 90-95% meat.
  • Minced chicken: take lean (in it, as a rule, no more than 10 g of fat per serving) or very lean (less than 5 g).

Fish and Seafood:

The same advice applies here as when choosing fruits and vegetables - try to buy Russian sea fish in trusted stores. The fact is that the fish suppliers of most chain supermarkets are not always Russian. Fish can be grown in China or Vietnam, and for these countries our GOST is not distributed (it is impossible for the ice content to exceed 4% of the fillet weight). Fish is grown in unacceptable conditions, and they feed it to everyone in a row - accordingly, the quality of its meat is very low. In order to make it acceptable, phosphates are added to keep moisture in the fillet. Frozen, stuffed with chemistry, such a fish gets on the Russian shelves. It is not profitable for stores to write the real address of the supplier, so Russian is often written on the labels.
Nutritionists recommend replacing meat and poultry with fish or seafood twice a week to reduce saturated fat intake, replacing them with omega-3 fatty acids that are good for the brain and heart.

Buy sea fish - it is the safest for health. The river often contains harmful substances, since the quality of such water leaves much to be desired. The conditions for keeping artificially farmed fish in Russia may perhaps differ from Chinese, but not by much. Salmon, trout - all these are fish grown artificially, whether it is Norway or almost any other country in the world. And no matter how great the temptation to buy them, we advise you not to. The only salmon that can be eaten with full confidence in its “purity” is the Baltic. But it is quite difficult to find on the shelves of Russian stores.

Fish caught in natural reservoirs: pink salmon, flounder, saffron cod, perch, cod, pollock, herring, mackerel.

Artificially grown: dorado, sea bass, sea language, carp, pangasius, telapia, salmon.
